City of Williamsburg Launches Cybersecurity Training Pilot Program for Residents

The City of Williamsburg has launched a Resident Cybersecurity Training, a free pilot program that teaches residents how to raise their awareness of cybersecurity threats.

The Resident Cybersecurity Training uses a course from KnowBe4, an industry leader in helping organizations train employees on how to identify internet security risks. The Resident Cybersecurity Training focuses on home internet security threats.

The City of Williamsburg has used KnowBe4 to train all employees on cybersecurity threats since 2017. The City’s phishing-prone percentage – the percentage of employees who fell for a simulated phishing attack – has dropped from over 20% to under 3%.

“KnowBe4’s training has demonstrably reduced the risk of a cybersecurity threat reaching the City organization,” Chief Information Officer Mark Barham said. “We want our residents to have the necessary information and awareness to protect their cybersecurity at home in much the same way.”

An interest form for the Resident Cybersecurity Training pilot program can be found at williamsburgva.gov/cybersecurity

A limited number of people can participate in the pilot program. Only City of Williamsburg residents will be accepted into the program. Those accepted will receive an email from the City of Williamsburg with further instructions on how to take the free training course at home.
