Animal Control

The City contracts with James City County Animal Control located at:
430 Waller Mill Road
Williamsburg, VA 23185

Call 757-565-0370 or 757-253-1800 on weekends, evenings, or holidays to report stray dogs and cats, suspected abuse of livestock or domestic animals, and small injured wildlife such as raccoons and opossums. Animal Control handles nuisance domestic animals for excessive barking, biting or attacking without provocation, chasing vehicles, trespassing upon school grounds or private property in such a manner as to damage property. Animal Control can also assist with lost pets and adoptions.

Heritage Humane Society

The Heritage Humane Society accepts animals that are homeless and offers pets for adoption. Please call 757-221-0150. The Humane Society is located at:

Nuisance Wildlife

Call the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries at 804-367-1000 for nuisance wildlife or to report problems with larger wildlife such as bears or deer.

Injured or Orphaned Wildlife

Wildlife Response is an all-volunteer Hampton Roads organization. If you find injured or orphaned wildlife call their 24-hour Hotline: 757-543-7000.

Dead Animal Pickup

If inside the City of Williamsburg call the Public Works Department at 220-6140. If outside of the City of Williamsburg (James City or York County) call the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) at 800-367-7623.

City of Williamsburg Dog Tags

Contact the City of Williamsburg Finance Department, at 757-220-6180. They will need to see a copy of the dog's current rabies vaccination report. The cost is $5 if the pet has been neutered or spayed, and $10 if not. An application (PDF) is available on the Finance Department website.

Waller Mill Dog Park

The Waller Mill Dog Park is located at Waller Mill Park on Airport Road. The Dog Park at Waller Mill Park is located at the main entrance to the park, adjacent to the parking lot. The 1.5-acre dog park is an unleashed dog park with two areas for dogs to run. One fenced area is for smaller dogs weighing 30 pounds or less, and the other fenced area is for all dogs.
