Voter Registration
Eligibility
You are eligible to register to vote if you are:
- A citizen of the United States
- At least 18 years of age by the next general election
- A resident of Virginia
When Can I Register to Vote?
You may register to vote year-round except during the 28 days prior to a general or primary election.
How Do I Register to Vote?
Online
Register online at the Department of Elections website.
In-Person
In-person, from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) at:

By Mail
By mail, pick up a Virginia Voter Registration Application at the following sites:
- City of Williamsburg, Department of Human Services - 401 Lafayette Street
- Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) - 5235 John Tyler Highway (Route 5)
- Military recruitment offices
- William and Mary - Office of Residence Life, Campus Center
- Williamsburg Regional Library - 515 Scotland Street

Registering by Mail Guideline
Please note: Virginia law requires that those who register by mail, rather than in person, must vote in person the first time they vote. Exempt from this requirement are military service members and dependents, overseas citizens, full-time students, and disabled persons.
Application
Download the Virginia Voter Registration Application (PDF). You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader program installed on your computer to view and print the application. Once downloaded, you may print the form, fill out completely and sign the form, and then mail it to us. This form may not be faxed to be accepted.
Change of Name / Address
Please report a change of name or address. To remain a qualified registered voter, the law requires you to notify your local voter registration office of any change in your name or address. This must be done before the registration books close for the next election. You can submit your notice of change of name or address either by fax to 757-220-6157 or by mail:

In either case, the notice must include your signature to be valid. Notice cannot be made by telephone or by email. After your change is processed, you will be mailed a new Voter Information Card. If a new card does not arrive within a few weeks, please call us at 757-220-6157 to confirm that your notice was received.
Information Required to Register to Vote
The following information is required to register to vote:
- Full legal name (including middle name)
- Home address
- Birthdate
- Social security number
- Affirmation of U.S. citizenship
- Affirmation of not being a convicted felon (or having your rights restored)
- Affirmation of not having been judged to be incapacitated (or court restored)
- Complete address of any previous registration on Election Days
- Signature and date on card
