To prevent serious damage to underground utility lines or even personal injury, residents should contact MISS Utility prior to any excavation by dialing 811.

Public vs. Private
Some underground utilities on your property will not be marked by Virginia811 members because they are not owned by 811 members. These can include underground lines to septic tanks, electric lines to sheds or landscaping lighting, lawn irrigation systems and more. A general rule is if the utility runs from the street to the meter, it will be marked. If the utility is installed from the meter to another location on your property, it will not be marked.
Marking Color Codes
Underground utility lines may be marked with paint, flags, stakes, or with any combination of these means. Privately-owned underground utility lines such as private water and sewer service lines, sprinkler systems and invisible pet fences will not be marked. It is your responsibility to locate these lines or hire someone to locate them for you.

Call 811 before you dig. Allow required time for marking. Respect and protect the marks. Excavate carefully.
