City Receives Risk Management Award
Posted Date: 6/25/2010

Greg Dickie, Director of Member Services for Virginia Municipal League (VML) Insurance Programs presented an award for excellence in risk management to the City of Williamsburg at their June Council meeting. Mayor Jeanne Zeidler accepted it on behalf of the employees and citizens of the City of Williamsburg. The City of Williamsburg is one of only seven members selected to receive recognition for their risk management efforts during the 2009/2010 fund year.

“The City has been a member of VML Insurance Programs since 1985 and has an excellent loss ratio of 42%. The attention given to safety and good claims management practices reflects this,” said Dickie when he presented the award. “The City also offers modified duty for employees recovering from their work related injuries. This practice not only reduces costs but helps in the medical recovery of the employee.”

The City has implemented remedial training for employees to address safety violations. Web based safety training is being used to compliment an already comprehensive training program.

The City’s Safety Committee team members are: Lori Rierson, Parks & Recreation Director, who chairs the group; Julie Phares, Risk Manager, Jackie Herrmann, Human Resources Specialist; and City department representatives Susan Geary (Police Department); John Hansen (Fire Department); Karen Kelly (Planning); Elsa Korrigan (Human Services); Paul Reeser (Public Works); and Jane Trimble (Finance).

VML Insurance Programs is a non profit, group self insurance fund for Virginia local governments. VML Insurance Programs provides property and casualty coverage to more than 475 Virginia localities.
